For cake
  1. 1 C butter, softened
  2. 2 C sugar
  3. 4 eggs, separated
  4. 1 tsp salt
  5. 1/2 tsp baking soda
  6. 1 C buttermilk
  7. 3 C sifted flour
  8. 1 tsp vanilla
  9. 1 tsp maple extract
For frosting
  1. 4 Tbsp room temp butter
  2. 1 tsp maple extract
  3. 1 C powdered sugar
  4. 3 tsp milk
For cake
  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add egg yolks one at a time.
  3. Add salt to creamed mixture and stir well.
  4. In a separate bowl, add soda to buttermilk and mix.
  5. Gradually add buttermilk and flour to creamed mixture.
  6. Add extracts.
  7. Beat egg whites until stiff and gently fold into batter.
  8. Bake until golden brown.
For frosting
  1. Whip all ingredients on medium speed until light and fluffy.
